તમે કામ શરૂ ન કરી દો ત્યાં સુધી તમે કેટલે દૂર સુધી જઇ શકો છો એ ક્યારેય નહીં જાણી શકો. આવી શરૂઆત નહીં કરો તો તમે આખું જીવન ખૂબ સીમિત કરી દેશો અને હંમેશાં અફસોસ કરશો કે કાશ, મેં ફલાણી ચીજ કરવાની કમસે કમ કોશિશ કરી હોત...!

એક તરુણીએ કોલેજના એક ફંકશનમાં મને પૂછ્યું, ‘મારા જેવી છોકરીને ખબર હોવી જ જોઇએ એ સૌથી મહત્વની વાત કઇ છે?’ મેં એને કહ્યું, ‘યુ કેન ડુ ઈટ’ યા તો ‘તમે આ કરી શકો છો’ એ ફિલોસોફી પર તારે ચાલવું જોઇએ, પછી તું જે કરવા ઇરછતી હોય એ કરી શકે છે.’ આ સાંભળીને એ ખૂબ આશ્ચર્યમાં પડી ગઇ. કદાચ પહેલાં કોઇએ એને આ વાત કહી નહોતી.

અંગત રીતે You can do it મારા જીવનનું બહુ મહત્વનું વાક્ય રહ્યું છે. આ વાક્યની શક્તિથી પરિચિત કરાવવાનો સૌથી સાચો રસ્તો એ છે કે હું તમારી સાથે પોતાનો અનુભવ શેર કરું. મહામંદીના અત્યંત મુશ્કેલ સમયમાં મોટા થવા છતાં એ વિચાર મારામાં ઠાંસીઠાંસીને ભરવામાં આવેલો કે હું કંઇ પણ કરી શકું છું. મારાં બાળપણનાં અદ્ભુત વર્ષો મેં જ્યાં ગાળેલાં એ મકાન અમારે છોડવું પડ્યું હતું. એનું કારણ માત્ર એ હતું કે પિતાજીને નોકરીમાંથી રજા આપી દેવામાં આવેલી અને તેઓ આ ઘરમાં રહેવાનો ખર્ચ ઉઠાવી શકે એમ નહોતા, પછી મારા કુટુંબે મારા દાદા-દાદીના મકાનના ઉપરના ઓરડામાં રહેવું પડ્યું.

ત્યાં હું માળિયા નીચે સૂતો હતો એવું મને યાદ છે. મંદીનાં સૌથી વધુ ખરાબ પાંચ વર્ષ દરમિયાન અમે ત્યાં જ રહ્યાં. અલબત્ત, બાળપણના આ દિવસો મારે માટે ખરાબ નહોતા. એ સમયે મોટરો બહુ દેખાતી નહીં, એટલે અમે સડક પર બોલ-બોલ રમી શકતા હતા. અમારા બોલની હાલત એટલી તો ખખડી જતી કે અમારે એની અંદર ચીથરાં ભરીને બહાર દોરા વીંટાળવા પડતા. થોડા પૈસા કમાવા હું ઘરેઘરે સવારે અખબાર નાખવા લાગ્યો. સાઇકલ ખરીદવાના પૈસા તો હતા નહીં, તેથી હું પગપાળા ચાલીને છાપાં નાખતો. એ દિવસોમાં ૧૦ સેન્ટ પણ મોટી રકમ ગણાતી.

મને બરાબર યાદ છે કે એક દિવસ એક માણસ અમારા ઘરે કોઇ મેગેઝિન વેચવા આવેલો અને વાત કરતાં કરતાં રડી પડેલો. કારણ એ હતું કે મેગેઝિનની છેલ્લી નકલ ન વેચી લે ત્યાં સુધી એ ઘરે જઇ શકે એમ નહોતો. મારા પિતાએ એને કહી દીધું કે અમારા ઘરમાં ફૂટી કોડી પણ નથી. આમ છતાં, પપ્પા મને ‘યુ કેન ડુ ઈટ’ કહીને સતત પ્રોત્સાહિત કરતા જ રહ્યા.મારા પિતાજી એકદમ હકારાત્મક વ્યક્તિ હતા. પોઝિટિવ થિંકિંગની શક્તિમાં તેમને વિશ્વાસ હતો.

જોકે, એમને પોતાના જીવનમાં ધારી સફળતા નહોતી મળી છતાંય તેમનામાં ક્યારેય કડવાશ કે નિરાશા આવ્યાં નહીં. તેઓ મને હંમેશાં કહેતા હતા, ‘તું મોટો થઈને મહાન કામ કરવાનો છે. તું મારા કરતાં ઘણું વધારે હાંસલ કરી શકીશ અને મારાથી ઘણો આગળ નીકળીશ. તું એ બધું જોઈ શકીશ, જેને હું કદી માણી શક્યો નથી.’

હું પ્રેમ અને આત્મીયતાભર્યા પારિવારિક માહોલમાં મોટો થયો છું. જબરજસ્ત મંદીમાં પણ મારા પરિવારે ખુશી શોધી અને ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્યમાં વિશ્વાસ રાખ્યો. હું લકી હતો કે મને ગ્રાન્ડ રેપિડ્સ ક્રિશ્વિયન હાઇ સ્કૂલ નામની ખાનગી સ્કૂલમાં ભણવાનો મોકો મળ્યો. માતા-પિતાએ મને એ સ્કૂલમાં મોકલવા ઘણી મહેનત કરેલી અને ઘણો ભોગ આપેલો. જોકે હું માત્ર પાસ થવા જેટલી જ મહેનત કરતો હતો, તેથી પિતાજીને ઘણી નિરાશા થઇ. એમણે મને એ સ્કૂલમાંથી ઉઠાડી લીધો અને ઇલેકિટ્રશિયનનું કામ શીખવા માટે પબ્લિક સ્કૂલમાં દાખલ કરી દીધો. મને પછી તરત જ સમજાઇ ગયું કે મોજમસ્તીમાં સમય બરબાદ કરીને મેં કેટલું બધું ગુમાવ્યું છે. મારે પેલી ગ્રાન્ડ રેપિડ્સ ક્રિશ્વિયન હાઇસ્કૂલમાં પાછા ફરવું હતું.

મેં માતા-પિતાને કહી દીધું કે તમે ફીની ચિંતા ન કરો, હું નાની-મોટી નોકરીઓ કરીને પૈસા કમાઈશ અને ફી તો હું જ ભરીશ. આ વખતે હું ભણવામાં ગંભીર હતો, એટલે મને સારા માકર્સ મળવા લાગ્યા. હું મારા સિનિયર કલાસનો પ્રેસિડન્ટ પણ ચૂંટાયો હતો. આવી સ્કૂલમાં ભણવા બદલ હું આજ સુધી કૃતજ્ઞતા અનુભવું છું. ઘરમાં શીખેલાં આશાવાદ, આસ્થા અને સખત મહેનતની શિખામણોને સ્કૂલે ઓર મજબૂત કરી. આ સ્કૂલમાં પાછા ફરવાનો અને એની ફી જાતે ભરવાનો નિર્ણય મારે માટે બહુ જ મહત્વનો સાબિત થયો.

જિંદગીમાં પહેલી વાર મેં કોઇ નક્કર નિર્ણય લીધેલો, જેનાં દૂરગામી પરિણામ આવ્યાં. મેં અનુભવ્યું કે હું માત્ર ઇલેકિટ્રશિયન બનીને ન રહી શકું. પિતાજીએ મારા માટે જે સપનું જોયેલું એ મારા જીવનનું પથપ્રદર્શક બની ગયું. સ્કૂલમાં મારા પ્રિય શિક્ષકે મારી યર બૂકમાં સરળ પણ યાદગાર પંક્તિ લખી હતી, જેણે મારી આખી જિંદગી બદલી નાખી, ‘ઇશ્વરના સામ્રાજ્યમાં નેતૃત્વની પ્રતિભા’. આ વાત ‘યુ કેન ડુ ઈટ’ની જ પુષ્ટિ કરતું હતું ને! હાઇ સ્કૂલમાં જ હું જે વેન એન્ડલને મળ્યો અને અમારી આજીવન ભાગીદારીની શરૂઆત થઇ.

જે વેનના પિતા ઓટો ડીલર હતા, એટલે તંગીના માહોલમાં પણ અમારી શાળાના એ વિદ્યાર્થીઓમાંનો એક હતો, જેમની પાસે કાર હતી. એની કારમાં અમે બધા મિત્રો ખીચોખીચ ભરાઇ જતા. કેટલાક સીટ પર જગા ન મળે એટલે બહાર બોર્ડ પર ઊભા રહેતા. હું એને ઘરથી સ્કૂલ સુધીના કાર-પ્રવાસ બદલ દર અઠવાડિયે ૨૫ સેન્ટ આપતો હતો!

એ કાર-પ્રવાસ દરમિયાન થતી વાતચીતમાં સોનેરી ભવિષ્યનાં યુવા સપનાં ઊછળતાં. ત્યાં જ બિઝનેસ માલિકોરૂપે અમારી કરીઅરનો પાયો નખાયો. અમને એ વિશ્વાસ હતો કે અમે આ કરી શકીએ છીએ. મારા રસપ્રદ જીવન તરફ પાછો વળીને જોઉં છું તો કહી શકું છું કે મેં જીવનમાં ઘણા બિઝનેસ શરૂ કર્યા, સુખી પરિવાર બનાવ્યો, પૌત્ર-પૌત્રીઓનો આનંદ લીધો અને આ બધાનો પાયો એ જ છે: ‘યુ કેન ડુ ઈટ’.

જે અને મેં હાઇ સ્કૂલમાં જ એવી સ્પષ્ટ - સમજૂતી કરેલાં કે અમે બન્ને સાથે મળીને જ કોઇ બિઝનેસ શરૂ કરીશું. બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધમાં વિદેશમાં ફરજ બજાવીને પાછાં ફર્યા બાદ અમે એક ફ્લાઇંગ સ્કૂલ શરૂ કરી. જો કે અમારા બેમાંથી કોઇને વિમાન ઉડાડતાં આવડતું નહોતું. એ પછી અમે અમારા વિસ્તારની પહેલી ડ્રાઇવ-ઇન રેસ્ટરાં શરૂ કરી. તે વખતે અમને રેસ્ટરાં ચલાવવાનો પણ ક્યાં કોઇ અનુભવ હતો? છેવટે ૧૯૫૯માં અમારા ઘરોના બેઝમેન્ટમાં એમવેનો પાયો નખાયો.

સકારાત્મક વાતાવરણને કારણે હું પોઝિટિવ વ્યક્તિ બન્યો. પિતાજીના પ્રોત્સાહક શબ્દો ‘તુ આ કરી શકે છે’ મારા કાનમાં ગુંજતા રહ્યા અને મને વિશ્વાસ થઇ ગયો કે હું કંઇ પણ અને બધું જ કરી શકું છું. મારી પત્ની હેલન મને જોખમી સાહસ કરનારો કહે છે. એ કહે છે કે હું એને દુનિયાની એવી જગ્યાઓ પર લઇ જાઉં છું, જ્યાં જવાની એણે ક્યારેય કલ્પના પણ ન કરી હોય.

હું બસ કહું છું, ‘ચાલો, જઇએ! ચાલો, આ અજમાવીએ!’ મને લાગે છે કે ‘યુ કેન ડુ ઈટ’ અભિગમવાળી સકારાત્મક વ્યક્તિ આવી જ હોવાની. મને બિઝનેસમાં સફળતા મળશે એવું સપનું જોયેલું પણ તે આટલી મોટી સફળતા હશે તેવી કલ્પના નહોતી કરી. એમવેની અભૂતપૂર્વ સફળતાને લીધે લોકો મને ભવિષ્યદ્રષ્ટા બિઝનેસમેનનું બિરુદ આપે છે, જેમણે પોતાની સફળતાની ચોક્કસ-સ્પષ્ટ યોજના બનાવેલી. બકવાસ! હકીકત તો એ છે કે અમે બન્ને પણ બીજા લોકોની જેમ પોતપોતાના કુટુંબને પાળવાની - પેટ ભરવાની જ કોશિશ કરતાં હતાં.

અમે ક્યારેય સપનામાં પણ એવું વિચાર્યું નહોતું કે જેનું વાર્ષિક વેચાણ અબજો ડોલરનું હોય, જેમની શાખા ડઝનબંધ દેશોમાં હોય, જેના દુનિયાભરમાં હજારો કર્મચારીઓ અને લાખો સ્વતંત્ર બિઝનેસ માલિકો હોય એવી કંપનીના આપણે માલિક હોઇશું! ૧૯૭૦ના દાયકાની શરૂઆતમાં હું એક જગ્યાએ પ્રવચન આપી રહ્યો હતો. એમાં મેં શ્રોતાઓને પોઝિટિવ બનવાનો આગ્રહ કર્યો. એનું શીર્ષક હતું. ‘ટ્રાય ઓર ક્રાય’ (કોશિશ કરો નહીં તો રડો). મેં શ્રોતાઓને કહ્યું છે કે હકીકતમાં લોકોને બે વર્ગમાં વહેંચી શકાય: એક, જેઓ કોશિશ કરવા ઇચ્છે છે અને બીજા જેઓ, કોશિશ કરવાને બદલે એક બાજુ બેસી રહે છે, પોતાનાં દુર્ભાગ્ય પર રડતા રહે છે અને કોશિશ કરતા લોકોની ટીકા કરતા રહે છે. મેં એમને કહ્યું કે આપણે એવા યુગમાં જીવી રહ્યા છીએ, જ્યાં ટીકાકાર બનવું કેવળ સહેલું જ નથી, બલકે એ લોકપ્રિય પણ છે.

મેં શ્રોતાઓને કહ્યું કે અમે નિષ્ફળતાઓ મળવા છતાં કોશિશ કરતાં રહ્યાં. કેટકેટલા અખતરા કર્યા- ફલાઈંગ સ્કૂલ, ડ્રાઇવ-ઇન રેસ્ટરાં, ઝાડનાં લાકડાંનાં ઉત્પાદનોની આયાત, લાકડાંના રોકિંગ હોર્સ બનાવવા, બોમ્બ શેલ્ટર્સ વેચવા... ફલાઈંગ સ્કૂલની બજાર બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધ પછી એવી ન ઊંચકાઇ જેવી લોકોની ધારણા હતી. વર્ષો સુધી અમારી પાસે સ્પ્રિંગ અને લાકડાંનાં પૈંડાનો ઢગલો પડી રહ્યો, કેમ કે અમે બનાવતા હતા એ રમકડાંના ઘોડાની બજાર ખતમ થઇ ગઇ હતી. આવું એનું સુંદર મોલ્ડેડ પ્લાસ્ટિક મોડલ બજારમાં મૂકી દીધું હતું છતાં અમે કોશિશ કરતાં રહ્યાં. છેવટે એક એવી કંપની બનાવી લીધી, જે આજે હજારો લોકોને રોજગાર આપે છે.

મારાં સંતાનો ‘તમે આ કરી શકો છો’ના સૂત્ર સાથે ઊછર્યા - મોટાં થયાં છે. મેં એમને હંમેશાં કહ્યું છે કે તેઓ જે ઇરછે એ કરી શકે છે, જે કરવું ઉચિત છે અને જે કરવા પોતે સમર્થ છે એવું લાગે એ બધું જ. મેં એમને કહ્યું છે કે અમે એમને મદદ કરીશું, એમની ક્ષમતામાં વિશ્વાસ રાખીશું અને એમનો ઉત્સાહ વધારીશું. માતા-પિતાની ભૂમિકામાં આપણે ઘરમાં સકારાત્મક વાતાવરણ ઊભું કરવાની જરૂર છે. આપણે સંતાનોને એ વાતે પ્રોત્સાહન આપવાની જરૂર છે કે તેઓ જે નિશ્ચય કરી લે એ તેઓ કરી શકે છે અને ઇશ્વર પણ કૃપા કરીને એનો હાથ પકડી લે છે.

મને એક વાર આરોન કોપલેન્ડના ‘અ લિંકન પોટ્રેટ’ની ગ્રાન્ડ રેપિડ્સ સિમ્ફનીના મંચનમાં વાચક બનવાનું સદ્ભાગ્ય મળેલું. એમાં પ્રેરક સંગીત સાથે અબ્રાહમ લિંકનના શબ્દોને જોડવામાં આવ્યા છે. ‘તમે આ કરી શકો છો’નું જીવતુંજાગતું ઉદાહરણ લિંકન હતા. એમણે પોતાની જિંદગીની શરૂઆત ઇન્ડિયાનાના વેરાન મેદાનમાં બનેલા ગંદી ફરશવાળા ઓરડામાં કરી હતી. કેટલીય સ્કૂલોમાં માત્ર એક જ વર્ષનું ઔપચારિક શિક્ષણ મેળવ્યું હોવા છતાં તેઓ અમેરિકાના પ્રમુખ ચૂંટાઇ આવ્યા.

રાષ્ટ્રપ્રમુખ બનવા પહેલાં તેઓ દુકાનદાર તરીકે નિષ્ફળ નીવડી ચૂક્યા હતા અમેરિકાની સંસદ અને સેનેટની ચૂંટણીઓમાં પણ હારી ચૂક્યા હતા. ‘કરી શકું છું’માં માનતા પ્રમુખોનો આપણો સમુદ્ધ ઇતિહાસ છે એ જરાય આશ્ચર્યની વાત નથી. આપણે સૌએ આપણી અંદર ‘કરી શકું છું’ દ્રષ્ટિકોણ વિકસાવવો જોઇએ. એ પણ હકીકત છે કે ‘કરી શકું છું’ દ્રષ્ટિકોણની કમીવાળા લોકો સાથે આપણા સૌનો ક્યારે ને ક્યારે તો પનારો પડ્યો જ હશે. તેઓ હંમેશાં નકારાત્મક રહે છે અને હંમેશાં ફરિયાદ કરતા હોય છે. ‘હું કરી શકું છું’ પ્રકારના લોકોને યોગ્ય વળતર મળે, યોગ્ય પ્રોત્સાહન મળે તો તેઓ વધુ ઉત્પાદન કરશે, જેનાથી ‘નહીં કરી શકું’વાળા લોકોને નોકરી મળી શકે છે.

તમે કામ શરૂ ન કરી દો ત્યાં સુધી તમે કેટલે દૂર સુધી જઇ શકો છો એ ક્યારેય નહીં જાણી શકો. આવી શરૂઆત નહી કરો તો તમે આખું જીવન ખૂબ સીમિત કરી દેશો અને હંમેશાં અફસોસ કરશો કે કાશ, મેં ફલાણી ચીજ કરવાની કમસે કમ કોશિશ કરી હોત...! તમે મુશ્કેલીઓ-વિધ્નોને પ્રામાણિકતાથી મૂલવો છો ત્યારે કંઇ ન કરવાનું બહાનું શોધતા નથી હોતા, બલકે એનાથી બચવા-છૂટવાના રસ્તા શોધતા હો છો. એ કામ કરવામાં ભલે તમે નિષ્ફળ જાઓ, પરંતુ તમે કેટલે પહોંચી શકયા એ જાણવાનાં શક્તિ અને સાહસ તો આવશે. બીજી વાર તમે વધુ મજબૂત આત્મવિશ્વાસ સાથે કોઇ નવું કામ હાથમાં લેશો. એનો વિચાર કરો કે તમે શું કરી શકો છો અને બસ, એમાં મચી પડો. મોટું વિચારો!
